Breaking out a long-term relationship has messed in my head — Any advice?

Hi everyone,

Last night, I discovered the real reason why my long-term relationship ended. What I thought was a genuine connection turned out to be a lie. She cheated on me and spoke poorly of me to others while claiming to love me and only have eyes for me. It feels like our love wasn’t real; she used me for emotional and financial support.

Now, I’m left with a broken heart, debt, and three cats. She’s moved on, claiming she’s found her worth and is trying to live her "best" life. I’ve been struggling to cope since she left a month ago—I barely leave my bed, only going to work and then back home. My thoughts are consumed with negativity about her.

I’m reaching out for advice on how to move on from this. If anyone has been through something similar or has tips on healing, I would really appreciate your insights.

Thank you!

I'm truly sorry to hear about your situation. It’s incredibly painful when someone you trusted betrays your confidence and love. Healing from such an experience takes time, but there are steps you can take to begin moving forward.

First, consider reaching out to a professional counsellor or therapist who can help you process your emotions and develop coping strategies. The Canadian Psychological Association offers a directory of psychologists across Canada, which can be a good starting point. You can access it here.

For financial stress, seeking advice from a financial counsellor can be beneficial. Organizations like Credit Counselling Canada provide resources to help you manage debt and regain financial stability.

On a more personal note, taking small steps to change your routine can make a big difference. Perhaps start with simple goals—spending time with friends, engaging in a hobby, or taking your cats for a walk. These small actions can gradually help shift your focus and improve your mental well-being.

Remember, you’re not alone in this, and there are people ready to help you through this difficult time. Please take care of yourself, and know that healing is possible.
